

Known as The Last Knight for his bravery and battle skills, the great European emperor Maximilian and his story is as spectacular as it is familiar: It is the story of a prince who must learn to be king. The Death of Burgundy's rich sovereign sets a dangerous game into motion. Since he has no male heirs his beautiful and smart daughter Maria has to marry as soon as possible. Emperor Friedrich needs money to fund his war against Hungary. His son Maximilian is supposed to propose marriage to Maria.

Put under pressure by French King Louis, the citizens of Ghent storm Marie's palace and make her sign a contract in which she agrees to marry Louis' son Charles. She sends Joan, her lady-in-waiting, to Maximilian, who is instantly smitten by Marie's portrait. Joan returns to Ghent with Maximilian's letter announcing his visit. Louis threatens war against Burgundy should Marie breach the contract.
