A child while is going to church to make an altar boy sees a corpse in the street. No one else sees that corpse, and two minutes later, that corpse is disappeared. Later the child claims to have invented the story. Maigret must find out, first of all, if the corpse is really existed or if it is a lie of the child.

Maigret is dispatched on a special murder case to the South of France with instructions from a very high source not to make waves while solving the crime. The homicide victim, an Australian ex-pat, was a hero in the French Resistance.

Also staying is a flamboyant actress with her newly acquired second husband and a dog. There is also a gentleman whom Monsieur Louis describes as a "fixer" who "helps" people not favored by Lady Luck at the Casino. A unknown dead man is found in Monsieur Owen's bath with the actress's dead dog. Both the second husband and Monsieur Owen have disappeared. The actress faints; the nurse demures. Maigret who is on vacation and "not involved" even after Monsieur Louis's request for help get interested in the strange actions of the characters.

Maigret travels ex officio to help the brother-in-law of commisionaire who is a friend of his. The brother-in-law is being anonymously accused of the murder of a man who died having been run over by a train just outside his property. At the same time an ex-inspector that Maigret had had dismissed also appears and seems to be following the same clues and talking to the same witnesses.

Maigret goes undercover at a boarding house where a woman with two boys is occupying room number 4, hence Mrs. Quatre/Four. She has fled her home and husband with the boys and is in hiding after seeing a dead woman's body in the conservatory with her husband at night. Her reports to the police have no backing as the body is gone and her husband has also disappeared. Maigret takes on the investigation under the name Mr. Fountaine because a detail referring to a fountain, he believes, gives veracity to her story.

Maigret travels to Dole after a gun found with a murdered "vagrant" matched one used to kill another "vagrant" under a Paris bridge. There he encounters a pair of feuding sisters, one of whom owns the shed the victim was found in. The feud has been going on for 30 years, the source of which is both clear and muddied at the same time, just like the weather.

Maigret is called for by his nephew, a new inspector in the north after a man was found dead in a first class carriage. The 106 train to Paris which started outside France was stopped at the Jeumont station for 50 minutes during which the murder took place. His nephew had the carriage and dining car detached and isolated but ran foul of politics as a French Consol and his family, secretary, and nanny were on board. The victim's identity papers were stolen and the train is filled with a mixture of the guilty and the innocent and dentists. But of the murder? And who is and what happened to Max?

Maigret investigates the death of a seemingly boring accountant killed while standing at the bedroom window of his fourth floor flat. The victim had no strong feelings for his wife or his children, and a boring position at a bathroom fixture supplier, and has no friends, therefore, no enemies. His only love was a canary. Maigret calls his young nephew inspector to help find out just who the victim really was. He finds, literally, more of the same. But within that sameness, one difference.

Maigret, accompanied by an inspector from Scotland Yard, visits a small island where a man, who carried an old letter coming from Maigret, was murdered.

A shot is heard at 3pm from the waiting room of a shady financier. Minutes later he is found shot dead. Among the witnesses are two inspectors waiting to issue a summons. A suicide? Maigret sees it as a classic Agathe Christie mystery: enclosed scene and limited suspects, all of whom have motive. He keeps everyone there and lets them simmer until someone comes to a boil.

A government minister asks Maigret to investigate when he becomes the victim of "dirty tricks".

Maigret is traveling by train on vacation to meet his wife and niece when he sees a man jump off the moving train. He follows and ends up in the hospital at Saint Clothilde with minor injuries. Then he finds out that there have been several unusual murders in the area, locally attributed to a "madman" and he begins an investigation with considerable resistance from local authorities.

Maigret is called to a farmhouse in Normandy; the owner has been killed. There he meets a 23-year-old woman named Felicie who is extremely defensive. She and Maigret keep up a barrage of unkind words the length of the story, it's wonderful to watch.

Maigret goes to a small village after receiving a letter from the son of the schoolteacher. The schoolteacher is currently in prison awaiting trial for the murder of the village's postmistress. She was supposedly killed when he was out of the classroom for a few minutes one morning collecting graded essays from his house which is attached to the school. The schoolteacher is an outsider in a very insular community. Maigret investigates a collection of drunks and children to find the truth.

A count who is also a diplomat is murdered.

After receiving some threatening anonymous letters, an old classmate of Maigret wants him to investigate. Then, the classmate is killed.

A man finds a note signed Picpus written on a piece of blotting paper. Picpus says he is going to kill a fortune teller. And sure enough, a fortune teller is found murdered.

Maigret is not at all pleased to become reacquainted with the dubious Leon Florentin, who was at school with him and now needs his help.

While in Brussels where he is being rewarded with the Order of Leopold, Maigret is asked for by a man named Xavier Marton who tells him that he suspects his wife Gisèle to want to murder him. Then the man disappears. The following evening a woman by the name of Gisèle Marton is waiting for him in the lounge when Maigret arrives in this hotel. She warns the French commissaire that he must not believe what her husband has told him as the man is paranoiac. Puzzled by this unusual situation, Maigret decides to investigate. At the Martons'luxurious house (another oddity considering what modest jobs the couple have) he meets Jany, Gisèle's sister, who lets him know that he shouldn't believe all her sister says...

While assisting the police elsewhere in France, Maigret becomes unofficially involved in a missing persons case involving the husband (Marcel Blanc) of a young woman (Germaine Blanc). She's trying very hard to find her husband who has disappeared under mysterious circumstances, but she is very reticent when speaking about it to Maigret. As he follows her and finally gains her partial trust, the plot begins to expand to include stolen paintings, crooked boxing and a fence who turns out to be Germaine's father.

A tramp is found, unconscious and wounded, in the Seine.

When the wealthy owner of a pharmaceutical company is shot and killed at his desk with a plundered safe behind him, Maigret wonders if it was just a robbery gone wrong. Whatever it was, he's convinced the answer lies down the block, where the victim's ex-wife and her husband, his girlfriend and his wastrel son all live.

Dr. Baron is a respectable physician, married with two children. When his servant girl from Brittany dies of poisoning, her parents file a complaint with the police. Maigret travels to the doctor's home in Neuilly and investigates allegations of foul play associated with another servant; he also learns that a vagrant visited the house weekly.

While staking out a boarding-house where is staying Emile Paulus, a suspect, Detective Archambaud is wounded by a bullet shot from an undetermined place. To further the investigation, Maigret, his superior, decides to put up at the boarding-house posing as an ordinary guest. He is welcomed by Mademoiselle Clément, the dignified owner, and soon discovers the various people living in the place. He also takes a special interest in a woman who dwells in a neighboring block of flats, Françoise Boursicault, the lonely crippled wife of a purser most of the time at sea... A common thread through all of them is that... they seem to have something to hide...

A young woman tries to convince Maigret that the death of the cultured woman she worked for was actually a homicide. She accuses the victim's family, but the local judge defends the family on the basis of their high social standing and tells Maigret that her allegations are preposterous and should be disregarded.

Mid-August in Paris, and Maigret is due to leave on vacation. His travel plans get interrupted when a 60-year-old woman is killed in her own apartment. The police suspect it may be the latest murder committed by a serial killer. The same night, anonymous calls for police assistance come in from all over Paris, as if someone's trying to send a cryptic message.

A man is killed in a hotel in Paris. Maigret meets there a young woman who says she is a prostitute. But it seems to Maigret she is not what she wants him to believe... This seems to become the very last Bruno Cremer's Maigret.
